Initiatiefnemers en filmspecialisten Leendert de Jong en Elisa Mutsaers grijpen het momentum aan om de rijke Haagse filmgeschiedenis te vertellen. Het jaarprogramma start op zaterdag 6 juni met een openluchtvoorstelling op de Scheveningse boulevard voor het Kurhaus. Daarna volgen exposities, themawandelingen, filmprogramma’s, lezingen en het boek Film in Den Haag. 

Exposities
In samenwerking met het Haags Gemeentearchief is van maandag 8 juni tot 7 september in De Galerij in de tramtunnel onder het Spui de expositie Filmblik te bekijken.

Filmwandelingen
Op 25 en 26 juni zijn er speciale filmwandelingen met Judith Moortgat met een focus op locaties waar films zijn opgenomen

Lezingen
Het Super8 Reversal Lab zal ergens in 2027 een lezing geven. Het werkt aan het in kaart brengen van historische Haagse filmlaboratoria en zal gedurende het Film in Den Haag jaar de resultaten van het onderzoek presenteren en daarbij ook stilstaan bij wat er nu eigenlijk in een filmlaboratorium gebeurt.

In een informele setting zullen enkele korte films getoond worden uit Francien haar omvangrijke oeuvre, die op nationale en international festivals zijn vertoond.

Bovendien laat ze beelden zien van de film waar ze nu aan werkt: “Walkabout”.

In De Ruit is nog tot en met zondag 8 februari haar filminstallatie te zien ” The Alchemist’s Almanac to the Afterlife”. De installatie is van de straat af te zien van ’s ochtends tot ’s avonds laat, het adres is Gedempte Zalmhaven 761, Rotterdam (Metrohalte Leuvehaven, nabij de Erasmusbrug)

Francien van Everdingen (1969; Eethen) studeerde in Groningen en Tilburg: beeldhouwen; daarna de School of the Art Institute of Chicago: cinematografie. Film werd haar medium. Ze noemt zich ‘film-maker’: compacte films, vaak ultrakort.

Thomas is al lange tijd bevriend met het S8RL. Hij is een gepassioneerde kunstenaar die elke keer weer verrassende beeld op super8 maakt. Zet 10 scenes op een rij en je haalt het werk van Bogaert er zo tussenuit, zo’n eigen stijl heeft deze Belgische kunstenaar. Hij creëert bewegende schilderijen of schilderijen die bewegen.

Hun initiatief ‘het filmblik’ heeft veel korte 16mm films opgeleverd die na bijna 20 jaar nog steeds erg goed zijn om te zien. Dat komt omdat er beperkingen waren opgelegd. Elke uitgenodigde kunstenaar kreeg een 16mm filmblik van 120 meter wat een opnameduur heeft van 10 minuten. De productiemiddel waren aanwezig en er was een klein budget, daar moest het mee gebeuren. Kortom alleen mensen met goede ideeën en plannen konden daar een succes van maken.

Nu wordt een kleine selectie vertoond bij EYE op 28 november 2023 om 19.15 uur. Stichting Filmstad heeft veel filmblik films vertoond in het Paard, waar ik in die tijd ook filmoperateurs was. Bestel je kaarten hier bij EYE.

Back to the Future #3 is a 3-day festival that is all about analogue moving images and optical sound; a celebration of the ‘real’ film medium with an international programme of audio-visual performances, films, lectures, installations and radio programmes.

This year we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 16mm (celluloid) film format. In 1923 Eastman Kodak launched the 16mm as a cheaper alternative to the industrial 35mm format, and, in the following decades, it was taken up as the film format of choice for experimental artistic film.

A programme of short films by Australian experimental Filmmakers Richard Tuohy and Dianna Barrie that take us from windswept coasts to pulsating mega cities. The work revels in the energy of place as expressed through rhythmic movements of light and shadow and the wash of time as dissected into frames in the camera and reconstituted into flickering flow by the projector.
 
In and Out a Window  16mm, 2021, 12 mins
Our front window, from inside and out. Made during a long covid lockdown. A product of the distraction and abstraction that resulted from a lot of staring at the same pieces of glass. View clip.
 
Intersection 16mm, 2022, 10 mins
A staccato study of street level action and inter-action. People and vehicles on everyday journeys are atomised into coursing fragments of light, shadow, angle and inertia, reiterating and disassembling the creation of motion out of still frames at the heart of cinema. Filmed in ten cities on four continents. View clip.
 
Like a Lighthouse  2023, 12 mins
A blinding beam of light. The piercing sound of ships. Everything – the land, plants, the sky – shouts for attention. Perceptions assail us with their demands to be noticed. This film is kind of a home movie of a 5 day hike to the southern most tip of Australia.
 
Bus, Turning  2022, 7 mins
Barcelona, immediately after the independence referendum. Shot on black and white film stock using a re-invented colour separation technique. Dedicated to the spirit of independence everywhere!
 
Valpi  2019, 9 mins
A city of brick, tin and board, rent by internal tectonics and sliding into the sea.

Self Portrait with Bag  2020, 6 mins
A camera-less portrait of the artist. Super 8 cartridges placed inside a black cotton bag, the film advanced via a hand crank. The tiny gaps in the fabric weave make for dozens (hundreds? thousands?) of tiny pinholes. View clip.
 
China not China  2018, 14 mins
Hong Kong marked 20 years since its hand over; just under half way through the planned 50 year ‘one country, two systems’ transition. Taiwan, once imperial China, once Formosa, now ROC on the edge of the PRC. Multiple exposures of street scenes distort space and place creating a fluid sense of impermanence and transition, of two states somewhere between China and not China. View clip.

Hoewel dit klinkt als een sprookje, gaat hun droom hand in hand met uitdagingen. Ze worden geconfronteerd met verschillende kanten van de werkelijkheid die, eenmaal blootgelegd, een nieuw licht werpen op hoe het leven van een droom er ook uit kan zien.

Deze film wordt gerealiseerd door een crowdfunding actie op voordekunst.nl.

Het originele super8 film materiaal is door het S8RL ontwikkeld.

Als jij je afvraagt waarom die kleuren zo ‘gek’ zijn dan komt dit omdat de band heeft ervoor gekozen heeft om de kleuren niet digitaal aan te passen, maar het zo te laten zoals de originele film uit het chemisch bad is gekomen.

De Haagse band Hallo Venray is uniek, met een eigen geluid en een lekkere no-nonsens houding. Geweldig.
