A new book has been released that tells the story of the Single-8 film format introduced 60 years ago (like Kodak’s Super8 film format). No one other than Jürgen Lossau from Germany can produce these kind of books, his photos are always sublime and the texts substantive.

60 years of Single-8! FUJIFILM’s film format is celebrating a milestone anniversary in 2025. For this reason, Jürgen Lossau and Samuel Preston are presenting an illustrated book with all the cameras from Fujica, Elmo, Canon, Konica and Yashica. And there will be new information about the history of the film format.

Interview with Jürgen Lossau

Off2 visited Jürgen Lossau. In ‘click & surr’, his analogue specialist shop for Super 8 and analogue photography, the journalist, author, film producer, editor and publisher of several magazines talks in this video about Super 8 film collectors and other projects in which Super 8 plays an important role.

In Tokyo, Japan lives and works mister Tak Kohyama. His company by the name Retro Enterprises Co. Ltd is a legend in the small format film making scene. You can buy super8 and single-8 films and get them developed at the spot. Watch and listen to this nice interview that Tak gave to German channel Off2 who keep the home cinema in the 70s and 80s alive as much as possible.

Nothing was what it seemed

For the documentary on the life of Hugo Wilmar a camera crew showed up in the lab today. ‘Nothing was what it seemed’ is a working title, the final documentary will probably have a different one. For more background information I refer to the webpage of the Hugo Wilmar foundation.

Hugo de Wolf is a family member of Hugo Wilmar and saw a 16mm Kodachrome film for the first time, that was shot back in 1953 by Hugo Wilmar. What was on it must remain a secret for now.

The documentary is due by the end of 2024.

The story is based on a playful craftsman called Lionel who made his dream of giving waste a second chance come true. He created an association and a small store in Paris where he sells products made of waste involving craftsmen and women from around the world that share his dream. Together with Alexandra, he makes customers feel welcome, supports creators to make a living and brings kids to laugh during workshops. And, now and then, they leave the busy city life behind and escape to an old house in the countryside.

While this may sound like a fairytale, their dream comes hand in hand with challenges. They are faced with different sides of reality that, once uncovered, shed a new light onto how living a dream can also look like.

Lenny Lipton passed away

An important film-maker and author of several inspiring books on DIY film making has sadly passed away on October 5, 2022 aged 82. Personally, I got a lot out of these two books, chock-full of information that is useful.

You can find many information on Lenny like here for example or this wiki page. His books are one of the many I advise to read if you shoot analogue film.

Ronald Rosbeek (1953 – 2021)

On January 29th 2021 at the age of 67 year film-fanatic Ronald Rosbeek passed away.

I have good, warm and strong memories of him. In the late 1990s I worked as a film projectionist at Filmtheater Babylon, where Ronald taught me the tricks of 35mm film projection. We shared the same passion for film. We both loved the material and of cours the movies. Ronald was a special man in many ways, an inventor and someone who came up with solutions.

The film community has lost a fantastic person. And we must not forget that professionals such as Ronald Rosbeek also play a major role in the film world.

Ruud Molleman

Very sad news. On 7th July 2019 filmlover and filmtechnician Ruud Molleman from Amsterdam past away. His Studio 2M filmloopers are inextricably linked to the work of Marijke van Warmerdam, Tacita Dean, Rosa Barba, João Maria Gusmao & Pedro Paiva and that of many other artists. year. His filmloopers were sent to hundreds of museums and galleries worldwide. Ruud has worked with analogue film and film equipment for the past 51 years. And on this page you can read a very good article by Edo Dijksterhuis from de Filmkrant (only in Dutch language).

Parallaxe Johan closes doors

The only true photographic and motion vintage store in the Netherlands has gone. Johan who run his Parallaxe shop for a few decades with a lot of love, devotion and fun was forced to close his shop. The big f^%$#*ing investment guys simply killed it. The only thing these capitalistic people want is more and more money. Unfortunately we see this happening in the world, and there’s nothing we can do, but it does make us angry at people who own a lot of cash. So basically they asked such a high rent that is was impossible for Parallaxe to stay in business, you don’t have to be Einstein to understand that an analogue shop like this doesn’t has a large revenue. Johan closed his fantastic shop on January 1st, 2017.
I loot at this video (only Dutch language) with a lot of sorrow, because Johan meant a lot to the super8 community and he was a special character who did exactly what he wanted to do. People from all over Europe came to Amsterdam and to visit this shop. Johan was an analogue god, and his store was his church. Dear Johan, many thanks for all these years you run the shop! We will miss it!
