While researching and writing the book Film in The Hague, Leendert and Elisa discovered that the first film screening in the city took place more than two weeks earlier than previously thought. It occurred on 24 May 1896 at The Hague Zoo on Benoordenhoutseweg, and not on 9 June 1896 at the Kurhaus, as had long been believed.

Leendert de Jong and Elisa Mutsaers, organisers and film experts, are seizing the opportunity to showcase The Hague’s rich film history. The year-long programme kicks off on Saturday, 6 June with an open-air screening on the Scheveningen promenade in front of the Kurhaus. This will be followed by exhibitions, themed walks, film programmes, talks, and the book Film in The Hague.

Exhibitions
In collaboration with The Hague Municipal Archives, the Filmblik exhibition will be on display from Monday 8 June to 7 September at De Galerij in the tram tunnel beneath the Spui.

Film Walks
On 25 and 26 June, there will be special film walks led by Judith Moortgat, focusing on locations where films have been shot.

Lectures
The Super8 Reversal Lab will be giving a talk later in 2027. It is currently mapping out historic film laboratories in The Hague and will present the findings of that research during the Film in The Hague year, whilst also exploring what actually happens inside a film laboratory.

I went to live in The Hague in 1995 and there I soon became friends with Stichting Filmstad. A special group of people who produced their own films from, for and with each other. Since 2009, the laboratory has been based directly under Stichting Filmstad, in the heart of The Hague.

Their initiative ‘the film can’ produced many short 16mm films that are still very good to watch after almost 20 years. This is because restrictions had been imposed. Each invited artist was given a 16mm film can of 120 metres which has a shooting time of 10 minutes. The production tools were in place and there was a small budget, that was what had to be done with. In short, only people with good ideas and plans could make this a success.

Now a small selection will be screened at EYE on 28 November 2023 at 7.15pm. Filmstad Foundation has screened many film can films at the Paard venue in The Hague, where I was also a film projectioniast at the time.
The story is based on a playful craftsman called Lionel who made his dream of giving waste a second chance come true. He created an association and a small store in Paris where he sells products made of waste involving craftsmen and women from around the world that share his dream. Together with Alexandra, he makes customers feel welcome, supports creators to make a living and brings kids to laugh during workshops. And, now and then, they leave the busy city life behind and escape to an old house in the countryside.

While this may sound like a fairytale, their dream comes hand in hand with challenges. They are faced with different sides of reality that, once uncovered, shed a new light onto how living a dream can also look like.

The band Hallo Venray is from Den Haag and one-of-a-kind, with its own sound and a refreshing no-nonsense attitude. Excellent.
